2026 Growler Masters
Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Greystone Swim and Tennis Club
Games start at 10am
Rules and Information
We play with the same rules as the Growler (with the exception that all participants must be age 50+). The basic rules are described below, but please also read the Growler rules for more information on these rules and eligibility rules: Growler Rules
- Spirit of the Growler is encouraged!
- Each team will need to designate a point person/captain
- Each team will play at least 4 games (likely 5)
- Each game will typically run 20-25 minutes
- Teams can consist of a minimum of 5 players
- Each team needs to have one (1) or more female players similar to the main Growler rules with that female in the regular player rotation and on the roster
- If there is no female in your player rotation, a team can play with 4 players and the opposing team will be spotted 5 points
- Each team needs to arrive 45 minutes prior to your first game start time
- No-show teams 5 minutes after slotted start time will be considered a loss
- Cannot add anyone to rotation after the game has begun even if you start with 4 players
- Games are 5v5, rally scoring to 21, switch sides at 11 points
- All games must be won by 2 points with no cap
- NO Mulligans this year
- For the semi-finals, the top two teams on each court will advance. The #1 team on Court 1 will play the #2 team from Court 2 and vice versa. The winners of the semi-final games will progress to the finals.
- The Championship game will be a single elimination game to 21
- No cap on the number of members of a team (all must register)
Each team has a designated tailgating spot close to the courts big enough for a tent. Additionally, each team will have one close-up vehicle parking space. Team tents and vehicles must be in place by 9:15 am. Parking opens at 8:30 am. Each team is encouraged to have a team uniform/costume. The most original team uniform/costume will earn their choice of serve/side in their first game. Spots will be judged no later than 9:45 am. Once the Greystone Swim and Racquet Club parking lot is full, additional parking will be available along Sawmill Road.
Registration is $60 (including a $2 online fee)/player — This player fee covers the volleyball registration fee, a Growler Masters t-shirt, food, and a wristband for beverages.
- Spectators are welcome! Adult wristbands will be for sale for $20 and include food and beer; child wristbands (under 12) will be for sale for $10.
- Lunch (BBQ cooked by the Knights of the Nights again this year) will be served starting between noon and 1pm.
- The “Pours for a Purpose” homebrewers will return this year! When sampling their creations, you can donate $1 per vote to vote for your favorite.
- The guest fee for the swimming pool is $5/person.
- All donations will go to St. Baldrick’s fight against childhood cancer.
- New this year! We will have a dunking booth ($5/3 throws). We will be getting each team to put at least one player in the booth during the day.

Growler Masters this Saturday, August 15!
Growler Community! Come out to Greystone Swim and Racquet Club this Saturday starting at 10am for the premier Raleigh area volleyball event for the over-50 crowd: the Growler Masters, where the scent of Ben-Gay is stronger than the spirit of competition.
Welcome to the only volleyball tournament where the pre-game warm-up involves a group discussion about cataract surgery and a communal bottle of extra-strength ibuprofen. We’ve traded our 40-inch verticals for 4-inch shuffles, and the most common sound on the court isn’t the whistle—it’s the sound of grunting and knees popping as the players bend over to pick up the ball.
Expect high-intensity action, provided that “intensity” includes tactical naps between sets and frequent hydration breaks to manage blood pressure medication schedules. We play hard, we dive rarely, and we all agree that the net has definitely gotten higher since the nineteen-hundreds.
Special “Senior” Rules under consideration:
- Extended Medical Timeouts: 15 minutes allowed for the application of kinesiology tape and various topical ointments.
- The “Gentle Dive” Clause: Any player who hits the sand is allowed three minutes of silence while the rest of the team checks if they can get back up without assistance.
- Soft-Touch Service: Serves over 20 mph are considered “disrespectful” and will be penalized with a stern look.
- Mandatory Curfew: All matches must conclude by 7:45 PM so everyone can be home in time for Jeopardy!
